Chapter Seven
Jeremy stared at Holt, willing him to wake up. He’d been out of surgery for almost an hour but had not awakened.
He ran his hands over his face. How could this have happened? Who could have done it? He knew Langley was as hot under the collar as he was, but at least he was out doing something.
Meanwhile, I get to sit on pins and needles.
He got up and stalked over to the wall. There was no window, so he paced from the wall to Holt’s bed and back again. There’d been no time to shower or even clean up. He smelled like sweat and horse. And Jack Martin. Not an unpleasant combination in certain situations but not here. Not now. He stared at Holt again for a couple of moments. “Wake up,” he muttered, but the boy still disobeyed. His light-brown hair was tangled and sweaty, his skin pale where there were no bruises, his eyes closed, one in sleep and one from swelling.
“Wake up, Holt. Come on, buddy.” Jeremy put a hand on Holt’s shoulder and gently squeezed.
“You’re supposed to hold my hand so I can wake up dramatically by squeezing back,” Holt mumbled.
“Aw, God, buddy.” Jeremy carefully lowered his forehead to Holt’s and took hold of his hand.
“Too late, Jer. You know I’m awake.” Holt started to move but stopped suddenly with a groan.
“Take it easy. You’ve got a couple of broken ribs and a lot of, uh, stitches.”
“I know what they did to me. You don’t have to sugarcoat it. How bad is it?”
“The doctor was surprised at how little actual, um, tearing there was, considering how much blood you lost. But he still had to put about thirty stitches in your rectum. And I’m afraid you’re on a soft-food diet and stool softeners until everything heals up.”
“Stool softeners?”
“Yeah. You’re gonna be pretty sore down there for a while.”
“Really? Gee, and I thought this was going to be easy on me.”
Jeremy got blunt. “You’re hurt real bad. No joke. And you’ll be praying for soft shit until your butt heals.”
“Oh, gross.”
Jeremy finally managed a chuckle. “Don’t worry, buddy, it’s temporary.”
“That’s my silver lining? That’s it? It’s temporary?”
This time Jeremy laughed. “’Fraid so, son.”
Holt closed his eyes. Just when Jeremy thought he’d fallen back asleep, Holt asked, “Did you call my parents yet?”
“No, not yet. I’m going to call them in a few minutes. Tell them you got in an accident.” Jeremy didn’t like the lie, but Holt’s parents—his own sister—had thrown him out when he told her he was gay.
“Hell, Jer, tell ’em the truth. At least they’ll be able to say they were right.”
Jeremy leaned close to Holt. “They’re not right. Not about you, not about me. And we’re going to catch the sons of bitches that did this to you and send them away for a long time.”
Holt’s sad smile almost broke Jeremy’s heart. But he had things to do. “In order to do that, I have some questions to ask you.”
“Sure. Go ahead, but I didn’t see anything.
